A judge in Rio de Janeiro has issued a global ban on Adele’s 2015 hit song “Million Years Ago” following allegations of plagiarism by Brazilian samba artist Toninho Geraes. The dispute centers on similarities between Adele’s track and Geraes’ 1990s classic “Mulheres.”
The court order, revealed Monday, mandates Universal Music and Sony Music to immediately halt all distribution, reproduction, and commercialization of the song. Non-compliance could result in fines of 50,000 reais (about $8,080) per violation.
Geraes, a renowned composer in Brazil, claims Adele’s song copied key elements of his work. He is demanding over $150,000 in damages and seeking to terminate his contract with Universal Music, which represents both artists. He expressed frustration with the label, accusing it of failing to address the issue.
Universal Music has appealed the decision, arguing that the similarities are coincidental and stem from common musical elements or “clichés.”
The case has sparked debate in the music industry over copyright and artistic originality, as both parties prepare for further legal proceedings.
