Omah Lay expressed his happiness at his music being labeled “Afro-Depression” by fans in a recent interview with Billboard.

The artist claims that this demonstrates that people can relate to and comprehend his songs without him having to explain it to them.

“I definitely love it. I love that I started a new movement and my music started something new that I didn’t have to come out and tell people that my music is ‘Afro- Depression’. My fans made it up and I didn’t have to explain…It’s great to witness that I can just make music and the world can decide what it’s and it becomes a movement,” Omah Lay says.

Omah Lay uses his songs to share insights into his challenges, which makes his music known for its sentimental and emotional aspects. With the hit song “Soso,” his debut album “Boy Alone” was marked by this depressing sound, which led to his music being soon labeled as “Afro-Depression.”

In the interview, Omah Lay believes that a number of Afrobeats musicians have drawn inspiration from his music and have themselves been influenced by it.
