Veteran Nigerian actress Ini Edo has shared intimate details about her fertility journey and her decision to have a daughter through surrogacy. Speaking on the reality TV show Young, Famous & African, Edo revealed her long-standing desire for children and the challenges she faced.
“I got married at the age of 26 because I thought that at 31, I’d have been done with childbearing and I’d have returned and faced my career. I’ve tried, and I’ve had like 6 miscarriages, I don’t like getting into it. It wasn’t a fancy way out for me, I have always wanted to do this. I have tried! I have done IVF, I have lost pregnancies midway through and I know what I have dealt with as a woman,” she said.
Discussing her decision for surrogacy, Edo stated, “I never thought I would be someone who had fertility issues but I have had issues carrying pregnancies long term so when it looked like it wasn’t going to happen when I wanted it to happen I looked at how I wasn’t getting younger. I looked at my options and surrogacy came up so I took it and I’m very happy with my decision.”
In a 2023 interview on the podcast With Chude, Edo revealed she had suffered multiple miscarriages and eventually decided to stop trying. “I wanted it to be my child, my egg, so thankfully my eggs are good, so I did that,” she explained.
Edo first discussed her choice in a 2021 interview with blogger Stella Dimoko Korkus, citing a desire to avoid potential conflicts over the child. “Another major reason I opted for a donor is that it scares me so much when I see banter and controversies between a mother and a father over a baby in public forums or when I see the man insisting he wants his child if things don’t work out between both parties,” she said.
The actress has remained vocal about her journey, emphasizing her joy and satisfaction with her decision to pursue surrogacy.
