The terminal operator said in a statement on Sunday that the President, Bola Tinubu, will formally open the renovated West Africa Container Terminal in Onne, Rivers State, on Wednesday of next week.

The statement affirms that the $115 million, or over N178.2 billion, extraordinary upgrading project started at WACT in 2021.

It also stated that the biggest and most effective container terminal in Nigeria outside of Lagos is run by APM Terminals and is located in Onne, Rivers State.

The upgrade’s completion, according to WACT Managing Director Jeethu Jose, is a major turning point in the development of Nigerian ports.

“We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the upgrade of our terminal at Onne Port. This will be a game-changer for Nigeria, and we are thoroughly excited about it.

“The fresh investment of $115m is a further testament to the trust and confidence that APMT has in the Nigerian economy and contributes to our purpose of improving lives for all while lifting global trade,” Jose stated.

The first greenfield container terminal in Nigeria to be developed by a public-private partnership is called WACT.

Ideally located in the oil and gas free zone of Onne, Rivers State, the terminal serves as both a major entry point to markets outside of Lagos and an essential link to the rapidly expanding economy of Eastern Nigeria.

WACT created history on August 15, 2020, when it received the biggest container ship to ever dock at a Nigerian port.

With an overall length of 300 meters and a beam of 48.2 meters, the Maersk Stadelhorn can transport about 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of containers.
